Can All You Can, the season has begun

I have been to 3 farm markets in the last week.  Cannot get enough of fresh greens and produce.  Living upstate New York in the Hudson Valley, there are so many wonderful farms around.  With all that said, what do you do with all that you bring home??  Can all you can. I found this great image for advertising canning jars in the 1940′s, when having a garden at home was part of the way of life.  I made a matchbox with this graphic image, great for a hostess gift this time of year.

As canning will be on so many peoples mind, head on over to my friends Margaret’s  site A Way to Garden for a chance to win some Weck canning jars, these are on my list to add to my collection this year.

What is your favorite thing to can?  Mine is peach chutney and whole peaches.  As I was hunting around the internet I also found this great site dedicated to canning, Food in Jars, there are wonderful recipes and tip that Marisa gives.

I love to open up a jar of anything I put up last year in the dead of winter, it is like opening up a can of summer.

Happy canning.

Baby It’s Cold Oustide!!!

Grab a box of matches,

light a pretty candle,

build a fire,

open a bottle of wine,

wish everyone,

PEACE, HOPE & JOY

Enjoy this Holiday Season!!!

I get a call, House Beautiful is putting one of Shandell’s matchboxes in their magazine.

All I can think about is how grateful I am.

A big thank you for putting Shandell’s matchbox in the pages of “The Best”.

Summer is around the corner, so are the parties.

I cannot believe that the summer season is just around the corner.  Parties, events and plenty of barbecues are being put on the calender. As the invitations are being received, thoughts of hostess gifts will come to mind.

The editors of House Beautiful had Shandell’s matchboxes on their 2009 best “Holiday Gifts for under $25.”

Vintage Greek Key  wallpaper patterns, perfect for any party, cowboy boots for the summer barbecue, a polo themed matchbox for a day of watching games, a barnyard of chicken for a country picnic, vintage New York  images for your out of town guests, 19th century shells for a weekend at the beach.  The list goes on, along with the choices.
As a hostess gift, they will last longer than a bottle of wine or a box of cookies, and our large collection of styles—each drawn from our unrivaled 30-year collection of vintage imagery—would match any décor.

Let these light up your summer season.

An Amaryllis that needs no water.

amaryllis 3

Amaryllis, a native South African plant, Latin amarysso meaning “to sparkle. What a perfect meaning for this time of year. I love these plants, every year I search for a new, variety to bloom in my house.

Over the years I have collected 19th century botanicals  of these amazing plants, the detail in the drawings is what I love the most about them.  In the day with no cameras, the fine detail all done with the naked eye.

I have put some of the prints on Tissue Boxes and Matches, they make a wonderful  presents, with absolutely no care they will bloom for years.
